Scent Sense

In my last blog I alluded to how the choice of scent is largely a personal one. I also pointed out, however, that there are some classic scents with which you can't go wrong, whatever the space you want to spruce up. As promised, I will explore with you over the next few blogs, some of the most popular classic scents available. We will essentially strive to answer three basic questions in our pursuit, these being "what?", "where?" and "why?", but not necessarily in that order!

First up, we must identify the space (the "where?") we want to scent as that will largely inform the choice of scent or scents to use. And yes, combinations of scents can work wonders when used correctly, but more of that later! Let's start with the space in which you spend most of your time - that only makes scense right? I spend a lot of time on my computer in my work space, and i'm willing to bet many of us spend quite a lot of time in our work spaces too! I'm well aware that not all of us have private office spaces at home or at work and so it may not be possible to implement some of these choices independently. But let's work with what we have.

We all know by now how distracting a bad smell can be; and if you're in a productive place the last thing you want is an unwanted distraction. A work space should stimulate concentration, focus and high levels of creativity and productivity - the "why?" That being said what scent options are available to help us achieve our goal? Below I highlight my top five - the "what?"

1. PEPPERMINT

Peppermint is a natural stimulant that has been shown to increase concentration and energy levels as well as boost your mood.

2. LEMON

Lemon has a refreshing scent which has dual energizing and calming effect. It clears the mind and decreases anxiety. Lemon supports the immune system with antioxidants and toxin-flushing abilities. In short, it wards off illness keeping you healthy. A healthy body and mind is a productive body and mind!

3. EUCALYPTUS

The aroma of eucalyptus oil has a refreshing and rejuvenating effect on the body and spirit. It increases the flow of blood to the brain, making the mind sharper and more efficient!

4. CINNAMON

This sweet spice, though most commonly associated with baking, improves memory and cognitive functions. Cinnamon works best in a diffuser and can be combined with lemon and rosemary.

5. LAVENDER

This classic scent is delicate, yet powerful. It has been show to relieve stress and tension, two factors that directly alter our productivity. lavender is also useful in fighting depression , agitation and headaches, making it one of the most versatile scents around!
