Scent Sense - Pt 2

In my last blog , we observed how your space's function provides the motivation for which particular scent to use. We looked at the work and office space and identified scents that create an appropriate atmosphere for focus and productivity.

Today we will explore the use of scents in our living spaces, specifically our bedrooms. Outside of our work and office spaces, this is probably the place we spend the most time. Ideally, the bedroom should offer a sanctuary from life's pressures. It is an intimate and personal space that should provide an opportunity for rest and relaxation.

So what options are available for creating an intimate setting that also provides for rest and relaxation? Here are my top five:

To promote rest (sleep) and relaxation, my top three picks would be Lavender, Chamomile and Sandalwood. We spoke about the benefits of Lavender in some detail last time so let's look more closely at Chamomile and Sandalwood today.

1. Chamomile

Chamomile is rich in anti-oxidants and flavonoids and therefore has many amazing health benefits which include promoting sleep, relieving anxiety, treating depression and soothing the nervous system.

Chamomile improves sleep by encouraging the release of hormones that reduce stress and triggers drowsiness.

Chamomile forms very pleasant blends with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Lavender, Jasmine, Geranium, Tea Tree, Rose, Lemon, Lime and Ylang Ylang.

NB: IT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IF ONE HAS A DIRECT ALLERGY TO IT OR ANY MEMBERS OF THE RAGWEED FAMILY, TO WHICH IT BELONGS

2. Sandalwood

Like Chamomile, Sandalwood also possesses sedative and tonic properties in addition to other attributes as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and diuretic substance, among others.

Sandalwood blends well with Bergamot, Black Pepper, Geranium, Lavender, Myrrh, Rose, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang.

Jasmine and Ylang Ylang are perfect ingredients to create a romantic atmosphere in your bedroom!

3. Jasmine

Jasmine is a strong yet sweet and romantic fragrance, commonly found in flowers that bloom only at night. The flower is often associated with love and romance. It blooms only at night, filling its surroundings with its unmistakable and alluring fragrance.

Jasmine has aphrodisiac properties. It enhances your libido and feelings of sexual desire. It also helps cure problems such as premature ejaculation, frigidity, impotence and other sexual disorders.

Jasmine also has sedative properties, calming down the body , mind and soul, while bringing forth positive and constructive emotions. It also provides relief from anxiety, stress, annoyance, anger and depression.

Jasmine blends well with Bergamot, Sandalwood, Rose and Citrus fruits

NB: PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD AVOID USING JASMINE BECAUSE IT STIMULATES/INCREASES MENSTRUAL FLOW. HIGH DOSES SHOULD ALSO BE AVOIDED AS IT IS HIGHLY RELAXING AND SEDATING. AGAIN THOSE WITH ALLERGIES TO JASMINE SHOULD AVOID USING IT.

4. Ylang Ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang)

This scent was not widely known until recently. It is commonly found in the rain forests of certain Asian and South Pacific Islands. The Ylang Ylang tree produces flowers with a very pleasant aroma. it is commonly used as an ingredient in fragrances, perfumes and cosmetic products. It can also be mixed with a carrier oil and applied to the face to reduce blemishes. it also boosts hair strength and growth.

Ylang Ylang can activate romance and improve your sexual life by increasing libido and reducing frigidity.

Ylang Ylang blends well with Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lavender and Sandalwood.
